00001 King's Cross

i've been an Everything But The Girl fan for a short time in the context of their (almost) 25 year history. in the mid nineties, when they moved electronic, i was moving electronic.

Tracey Thorn took a break to raise her and Ben Watt's kids. after a lengthy hiatus, Tracey published what was to have been an album of cover songs. in the end she made a pretty solid album of mostly original tunes. one of the covers that became a victim of this shift in direction was King's Cross, originally written and recorded by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, aka the Pet Shop Boys.
Despite my collection of PSB albums, i didn't own nor never heard the original. to my surprise, there was a video too.

the wiki entry for Tracey's cover:
A cover of "King's Cross" appeared as an iTunes exclusive bonus track to Thorn's album Out of the Woods. A remix of Thorn's version by Hot Chip was released in December 2007 as a download-only single.

today's song of the day is the Hot Chip mix of the song. i downloaded the song the other day but my system kernel panicked during the download and it took me until now to resolve the matter with Apple.

hear a sample of it on the iTunes music store (US store)
